Which type should I use?
EAN-13 for products sold in the UK and Europe, and UPC-A for North America. ITF-14 is for outer cartons. Code 128 suits labels, tickets and stock codes. Code 39 is for older systems that need it.
Where do product barcode numbers come from?
Retail barcode numbers are issued by GS1. Shops and marketplaces usually check them, so don’t make up an EAN or UPC for a product you’ll sell.
What is the check digit?
The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number. It is calculated from the other digits so scanners can catch misreads. Enter the number without it and we add it, or with it and we check it.
How big should I print it?
Use the SVG for print, as it stays sharp at any size. An EAN-13 is normally about 37 mm wide. Keep the white space either side, and don’t shorten the bars too much.
